WHAT ARE THE HOSTING FACILITIES?

It can be anywhere that one or more people can stay for the duration of a trip. The best known are hotels, inns, hostels and rental houses.

Each place has characteristics and particularities, and guests can choose the category that best suits their needs and their budget.

What types of accommodation are available?

As the accommodation market developed, there was a need to create strategies to improve and enhance the service.

Therefore, in the 60's, the classification of these places was instituted. This was a way of guiding guests about what they would find in the accommodation. In addition, it also served to adapt the properties according to the characteristics of the business model.

In each country there are classification rules. In Brazil, the Ministry of Tourism created seven categories: hotel, resort, farm hotel, bed and breakfast, historic hotel, inn and flat/apart hotel.

Hotel: An establishment with reception service, temporary accommodation, with or without food, offered in individual units and for the exclusive use of guests, with a daily charge.

Resort: Hotel with leisure and entertainment infrastructure, which offers beauty services, physical activities, recreation and interaction with nature in the enterprise itself.

Farm Hotel: Located in a rural environment, with agricultural activities, which offer entertainment and experience of the countryside.

Bed and breakfast: Accommodation in a residence with a maximum of three housing units for tourist use, with breakfast and cleaning services, in which the owner of the establishment resides.

Historic Hotel: Installed in a building which has been preserved in its original form or has been restored, or yet has been the scene of historical and cultural events of recognized importance. Historical-cultural facts are understood as those considered relevant by popular memory, regardless of when they occurred, and recognition may be formal, by the Brazilian State, or informal, based on popular knowledge or academic studies.

Inn: Enterprise with a horizontal characteristic, composed of a maximum of 30 housing units and 90 beds, with reception, food and temporary accommodation services, which can be in a single building with up to three floors, or offer cottage houses or bungalows.

Flat/apart hotel: Consisting of housing units with a bedroom, bathroom, living room and equipped kitchen, in a building with administration, reception, cleaning and tidying service.

Hostels are not included in this Ministry of Tourism classification, but it is pertinent to consider them:

Hostel: They are usually more affordable alternatives than a hotel or inn, as the main feature is the availability of shared rooms (from three to nine beds, or more), most with a shared bathroom in the hallway. Today many hostels offer rooms for one or two people, sometimes with an additional bathroom.

Within each category there are subdivisions, in the case of hotels, large properties and hotel chains stand out.

LARGE HOTELS AND HOTEL CHAINS

Large Hotels

These are typically luxurious spaces which offer guests first-class services and experiences.

These large properties have a minimum of 300 rooms.

In Atlanta, capital of Georgia in the USA, Westin Peachtree Plaza has 73 floors and more than a thousand rooms.

The Venetian, a huge hotel in Las Vegas, has over 4,000 rooms.

Management of spaces like these is obviously quite complex, especially when talking about the Administrative, Operational and Strategic areas.

Hotel Chains

In addition to large hotels, there are several hotel chains described as companies that own multiple hotels in multiple locations.

The emergence of large international chains with hundreds of hotels is increasingly common. However, small regional groups can be considered networks, there are classifications indicating that the joining of three or more hotels is already seen as a hotel chain.

Each group has different ways of operating, some own all the hotels, while others manage properties of other companies.

The most common reasons for joining a conglomerate are:

 • Link with a trusted brand,

 • Demand and application of quality standards,

 • Be a reference in quality of services, food, assistance and location,

 • Greater bargaining power with suppliers and discounts for buying in large quantities,

 • Higher marketing and advertising budgets than independent hotels,

 • Reward programs to encourage guests to stay at their hotels whenever they travel,

 • Customer databases which can offer to hotels access to reservations and potential customers,

 • Standardization of procedures for different jobs,

 • Advice for hiring employees,

 • Standardized personnel training,

 • Advice for maintenance and operation,

 • Training and support, including access to management tools and technical support,

 • Unification of reservation systems.

TECHNOLOGIES TO MANAGE LARGE HOTELS OR HOTEL CHAINS

Technology is key to managing operations, centralizing information, increasing efficiency and delivering unrivaled hosting experiences. The systems can have several customization modules, in addition to applications, programs and other resources. One of the leading hotel management software is known as PMS.
