However, self-service concept emerged more than 100 years ago. Clarence Saunders was a visionary and created the first self-service supermarket in 1916, the Piggly Wiggly. 

The city of Memphis in Tennessee (USA) made history by receiving an innovative structure. Saunders removed the counter which separated customers and vendors and installed turnstiles instead. Then he provided baskets, shelves, price tags and circulation spaces. 

In the ads, a new shopping experience was encouraged - no rush and no lines. Customers could have direct contact with hundreds of products, compare prices, examine fruits and vegetables with ease and convenience. 

One of the excerpts from the advertisement was: "After you've done all that, you can just keep walking down the four separate aisles of a Piggly Wiggly store, which leads to an exit from the checkout counter, and there you can pass without even saying thank you”. You can just walk by, and no one will say anything to you.” 

Self-service conquered the country and in a short time several franchises were opened. There are currently more than 600 Piggly Wiggly stores in 17 US states. 

We were a bit curious about the name of the grocery store and we found that Saunders was creative in everything! 

There is a story that tells he saw some little pigs struggling to get under a fence, and the name came up out of the rhyme. Once, someone asked him why he had chosen such an unusual name and the answer was: "So people will ask that same question". Source: pigglywigglystores.com

Visionary Clarence Saunders kicked off a global transformation in the way we receive and serve customers.
