CARNIVAL: ONE OF THE MOST PROFITABLE DATES FOR THE HOTEL SECTOR

Carnival has not arrived yet, but the positive results of this period can already be seen in several sectors. Commerce profiting from the sale of items for the carnival; restaurants, bars and hotels opening new jobs and increasing inventories, transport sector expanding bus and plane fleets, hotels with reservations and maximum capacity forecast.

The National Tourism Confederation expects Carnival to move more than BRL 8 billion, this amount is almost 27% higher than the same period in 2022.

The sectors that should collect 84% of this amount during Carnival are:

  • Food away from home - bars and restaurants (R$ 3.63 billion)
  • Passenger transport (BRL 2.35 billion)
  • Accommodation services in hotels and inns (BRL 890 million)

MOST SEARCHED DESTINATIONS

Rio de Janeiro is at the ahead of the city's most sought after by revelers, followed by Salvador (BA), São Paulo (SP), Diamantina, Ouro Preto and Belo Horizonte, in Minas Gerais. The region of Carioca beaches and the coast of Santa Catarina are also on the list of main destinations.

In cities such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, trade activity has already been noticed since the beginning of the year, especially for the sale of costumes, props and items involving Carnival, especially street items. Riotur estimates that the street carnival groups alone should raise approximately R$ 1 billion and gather around 5 million people.

To reach destinations, buses are one of the options for moving around for many of these people. Brazilian Association of Road Passenger Transport (Abrati) has already recorded an increase in ticket sales. To meet the demand, there will be a 25% increase in the bus fleet.

For those who prefer air transport, the company GOL will provide 390 additional flights for the period, including the weeks leading up to and preceding the biggest popular party in the country, in all, there will be 72,000 extra seats.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS FOR THE HOTEL SECTOR

Rio de Janeiro has almost everything ready to receive this audience. Most Rio hotels already show 100% occupancy during the extended holiday.

In Salvador, the second most desired destination, the festivities should generate revenue of approximately R$ 5 billion. Luciano Lopes, from Bahia Hotel Industry Association (ABIH-BA) is very optimistic about Carnival period. “We expect an average occupancy of around 95%, reaching a peak of 100% in the average occupancy in some days of the party, especially in the main hotels in the city, so we have this estimate that the city is completely full in the period.”

Minas Gerais intends to receive twice its population during the carnival period. The Chamber of Shopkeepers in the capital Belo Horizonte expects the public to spend, on average, R$ 359.09 per day on accommodation, reaching at least R$ 1,4436.36 during the four days of the holiday.

HOW TO INCREASE HOTEL PROFIT DURING CARNIVAL DAYS

Aiming to increasing the average ticket, hotels are planning promotional packages, events and activities to make the stay even more pleasant, complete and profitable.

Here are some tips to ensure guests have fun without having to leave your hotel, hostel, inn or resort. Differentials can also be offered to tourists who will enjoy the parades, parties and street carnival groups.

  • To be assertive, you need to know the profile of guests to then think about strategies and activities;
  • Make promotional packages. A good strategy might be to give a discount to guests staying 5 days instead of 4;

  • Offer tours with exclusive itineraries and activities;
  • Include tickets for concerts, carnival groups, events or tours around the city or region;
